INSTRUCTIONS FOR PREPARING YOUR PANELS

ABOUT THE CONTENT
Explain through images (photos, diagrams, sketches, etc.) and a little amount of text (as little as possible! Think how painful is to read a lot in exhibitions) your case study and your vision.

The following are recommendations of what kind of information it should include, but it is depends on each case what you chose to present:

First of all, an interesting, empowering, sexy TITLE!

WHO
- The community
o Its context
o The problem
o The potentials
- The stakeholders
- The direct and indirect beneficiaries

WHY
- Your motivation to choose this case
- Why you believe this case has a chance for a best future

WHERE
- The physical location of your case (the exhibition designers are using geographical coordinates of each case location as part of the graphics. Please find the coordinates for your case! If you don’t have one precise location, just get one on the ‘area’)

WHAT
- The best possible scenario for 2020
o The ultimate goal
- The strategies, ideas, projects, etc. to get there
o They can be in a time-line or not… whatever suits your case better

YOU!
- Members of the team: name, country, age, background (profession, studies), e-mail
- Blog, wiki, webpaghttp://www.blogger.com/img/gl.link.gife, etc.

ABOUT THE GRAPHICS

LAYOUT
- Download here the Illustrator (version CS2) file with a layout example where you will put your images and texts in the best possible way to tell your story.
- The images and texts there are just to show you options.
- The layout is very flexible! The only constant should be to have the map and the cross marking geographically the location of your case. The layers called studentxxxxx can be changed as you wish
- Each team: Please choose one representative and make an appointment with the exhibition architects to develop a layout that works for your case.

IMAGES
- Photos, diagrammes, sketches, maps, etc. should be LARGE SIZE! The panels are 1.8 X 5.00 m. The images have to be 1:1
- Resolution: 150 dpi
- Types of files: TIFF or EPS
- Colours: CMYK

TEXT
- Texts in Finnish and English
- The following is an example of the use of font Lucida Sans (very common) and sizes for titles and general text. Please note that the font has changed! It was changed because this is now a family that has italics and regular styling. If you feel for some reason that you need to change the sizes, please confirm with Marco or Devon so all the boards remain consistent.

Titles:Lucida Sans, 45pt
Body text in English: Lucida Sans Demibold Roman, 36pt
Body text in Finnish: Lucida Sans Italic, 36pt

- It is recommended that you write the texts first in another file (e.g., word) and do not put it into the layout/Illustrator file until they are final. You can bring the texts to the tutoring so we check them together.

DELIVERY OF MATERIAL

Deliver in a CD with the team's name written on it

We take care of the printing and installation of the scaffolds. We need the help of 6-8 students to set up the panels and other elements (at the end of may, precise day to be confirmed).

Ville and Teemu's lecture: Visualisation of Futures Scenarios

Ville's lecture as introduction to futures scenarios and studies can be downloaded here.

Ville also presented the project 2020 Future Product Concepts, which has very good information and examples to visualise futures.

In the tutoring meeting (5.4.), I gave you a guideline of a futures table, and an example of a project I did about Futures Hospitals, just as an example of how to use the futures table to build scenarios.

The campaign about older people's rights. A very touching campaign to sensibilise about the problems of older people. Helsingin Sanomat chose it as the best campaign of the year 2005!

Mondragón Corporación Corporativa - MCC. A co-operative movement initiated in 1956 in Mondragón (Guipúzcoa). Its corporate values: Co-operation, participation, social responsability and innovation

America's Second Harvest. The Nation's Food Bank Network is USA's largest charitable hunger-relief organization

KessiaCare Foundation. Its a site dedicated to a little girl whom Kati and Mikko knew in Vanuatu, and who died of braintumor a couple of years ago. They set up an organisation to help families with terminally ill children.

People tree. An online fair-trade shop

Ithemba. A campaign for awareness and online shop

Design without borders. NGO by designers

Manna-apu. It delivers left-over and expiry-date-over food to people in need from department stores etc.

Global Dignity. Awareness about the universal right of every human being to lead a dignified life.

Coopa-Roca. A cooperative in the favela (slum) Rocinha in Brazil, developing very creative and distinctive decorative products and fashion

Massive Change. A project by designer Bruce Mau on the future of global design, mainly promoting a LEARN-ACT approach to changing the world.

Daspu Clothing. The materialisation of an awareness and promotion campaign leaeded by the Brazilian NGO 'Davida', which since 1992 is active in the social struggle for the civil rights of prostitutes. Very nice products!

Ashoka. An organisation that dentifies and invests in leading social entrepreneurs - extraordinary individuals with unprecedented ideas for change in their communities - supporting them, their ideas and institutions through all phases of their careers.

This is the blog for all activities related to Designing Worlds course, project and exhibition. Please feel free to comment, add, question, discuss, etc!

Our purpose is to open a forum for original and fresh ideas from young people to improve the quality of life worldwide.

This project is an initiative of:
- WorlDesign Research Group, University of Art and Design Helsinki
- Argonaut Programme, Department of Communications, University of Helsinki
- Prof. Pekka Himanen

In this case, we are concentrating on ideas and strategies to improve the quality of life of communities marginalised by poverty. This is done in line with the goals of the 2020 Initiative by the Young Global Leaders community.
